Marine Engineering at the Management Level (MEO Class I & II combined) Course

In accordance with IMO regulation III/3 and III/2 (STCW 1978 as amended), Marine Engineering at the Management Level (MEML) Course, a Candidate must fulfil the following requirements prior to joining the course

    • 1.Holding COC of Officer in Charge of an Engineer Watch (Regulation - III/1 as per STCW 1978 as amended)

    • 2. At least 18 Months sea service on ships of not less than 3000 KW registered power

    • 3. At least 12 months must be spent in watch keeping or UMS duties on the main propelling machinery of motor ships.

    • Once the above requirements are met, the Candidate will be eligible to attend Marine Engineering at the Management Level (MEO Class I & II combined) Course. The Maritime Academy has established a 22 weeks programme as per IMO regulation III/3 and III/2 (STCW 1978 as amended) and approved by Ethiopian Maritime Affairs Authority (EMAA). Course includes the following subjects, which consists of lectures, simulator training, practical, Self-study, interactive sessions, written assessment (midterm and final) and engine room simulator examination. Course is conducted by the Maritime Academy senior Chief Engineer instructors

      • 1. Engineering Knowledge Motor

      • 2. Engineering Knowledge General

      • 3. Naval Architecture and Ship Construction

      • 4. Electrical, Electronic and Control Engineering

      • 5. Engine Room Simulator

      • Upon successful completion of the course, the Candidate will appear four written examinations conducted by Ethiopian Maritime Affairs Authority (EMAA) on following subjects

        • 1. Engineering Knowledge Motor

        • 2. Engineering Knowledge General

        • 3. Naval Architecture and Ship Construction

        • 4. Electrical, Electronic and Control Engineering

        • and an oral examination conducted by Ethiopian Maritime Affairs Authority (EMAA) examiners panel consisting of Senior Chief Engineers. A candidate that successfully passes the written & oral examinations, will be entitled to receive his Certificate Of Competency of Second Engineer Officer Unlimited (Regulation III/2 as per STCW 1978 as amended) and will be eligible to sail as a Second Engineer Officer. For Certificate Of Competency of Chief Engineer Officers Unlimited (Regulation - III/3 as per STCW 1978 as amended) following are the eligibility requirements

          • 1. Holding Second Engineer Certificate Of Competency (Regulation - III/2 as per STCW 1978 as amended)

          • 2. At least 18 Months sea service on ships of not less than 3000 KW registered power

          • 3. At least 12 months must be spent in watch keeping or UMS duties on the main propelling machinery of motor ships.
