NEW AT EMTI – Engine Room Ratings Course

EMTI is currently conducting a program to train Level III vocationally qualified mechanics to become Engine Room Ratings. This is a new course. [The Academy already trains selected Ethiopian Mechanical Engineering Graduates as Marine Mechanical Engineers and Electro-Technical Officers in collaboration with the Bahir Dar University]. All graduates are employed by international shipping organizations from around the world.

About our Engine Room Ratings Course

  • Program duration: 11 weeks.
  • Location: Maritime Academy campus in Bahir Dar.
  • Ratings will have the same living conditions as students at the university.
  • The cost of training will initially be carried by EMTI; a loan agreement will be concluded on course to re-pay the study loan once you are earning money at sea.
  • The course qualifies successful students to act as a team member in the engine room under the leadership of the Officer-in-Charge of the Engineering Watch; Once at sea, the rating becomes a wiper and after a number of months, based on performance and recommendations, could be promoted to an oiler. Our course prepares the successful student for both these jobs. Generous salaries are compatible with current market levels in the maritime industry.
  • The learning outcomes of the course, in line with the STCW Code Section A-III/4, are:
    • Ratings forming part of a watch in a manned engine-room or designated to perform duties in a periodically unmanned engine-room; and
    • Section A-III/5: Ratings as able seafarer engine in a manned engine-room or designated to perform duties in a periodically unmanned engine-room. 

 

Course Requirements

  • Male Ethiopian citizens.
  • Minimum of a Level III vocational qualification [proven by a certificate] in the following occupational streams: General Mechanics, Automotive engine servicing, Metals and engineering, Mechanical production and manufacturing, or Electro-Mechanical production.
  • Less than 27 years of age.
  • A good command of both verbal and written English.
  • Medically fit to serve at sea according to ILO/IMO guidelines.
  • Willing to sign a waiver of medical confidentiality.
  • Applicants must be “free and clear” from any training-related commitment with any government organization including Ethiopian Airlines and Ethiopian Shipping Lines. Selected applicants may be required to produce release letters from their respective organizations if they are employed elsewhere.
  • Copy of 8th grade national examination certificate (required).
  • Copy of the Level III qualification certificate (required) and the National Certificate of Competence (recommended).
  • Copies of work experience testimonies will be an advantage.

Screening process

Applicants will have to pass the following screening process before joining the course:

  1. Written examination covering English, mechanical aptitude and mathematics;
  2. Interview panel including a basic handcraft test; and
  3. Medical examination.

Recruitment Time Table:

  • Application Deadline: 30 October 2014
  • Entrance Examination: 1 November 2014 at 9:00 a.m. at Bahir Dar Maritime Academy, Addis Ababa
  • Interview Panel and Medical Examinations for Candidates passing the written exam: 1 November 2014 at 2:00 p.m. and 2 November 2014 from 8:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
  • Distribute Finalist List: 7 November 2014
  • Course begins: 17 November 14 at 8:00 a.m.
